Her new humans call her Shell, because she is just a whisp of what she can become. Her legs resemble chopsticks, they tremble from time to time, not from fear because here, she has nothing to fear. But they tremble from weakness and neglect.
People ask me, where did she come from? I believe she came from God, because her story as it spreads throughout the Internet has lit fires in so many people affecting them in ways I would have never imagined.
She was part of a small colony. The woman, who tried her hardest to care for the eight cats, could hardly care for herself. The cats were housed in a small trailer on the side of a muddy hill, The windows boarded up to guard against prying eyes. The cats, they had air, and a way out of the trailer as the floor was cracked and rotting, falling apart, much like the woman who thought she was “helping”
I saw her right after she was taken from the only home she knew. She had been placed in a carrier in another rescuer’s care. Her new home was inadequate, crammed into a small carrier with food, water and a litter pan and not much else consisted of her having only one place in that small carrier to call her bed- her litter pan. She was stacked on top of other cats and I caught a glimpse of her. Bleary-eyed and sad, her tongue hanging halfway out of her mouth, heavy, smelly drool pouring out of her mouth, she smelled like infection and neglect. She watched me pass by and then come back. Ten minutes later, she was in my car and on the way to the vet.
When he looked in her mouth he discovered rodent ulcers, two teeth almost rotted through, stomatitis and gingivitis. Add to that, she is bone thin, suffers from Fragile Skin Syndrome (her skin will tear if you aren’t careful). She needs to be handled gently. She has feline herpesvirus, UTI and URI compounding her problem. She is unable to clean herself and if she scratches her skin, it breaks open and bleeds.
Her journey is long and is just beginning. She has many vet visits to not look forward to in her future. But, she is safe, she has all her basic needs; food, shelter, fresh water, clean litter pans and a caring vet. She has a mission to perform- one she’s already started. Bless her lovely little soul….If she was on Facebook, I wonder how many friends she would have for in her new life, the world has embraced her.

But I can't blame the migraines. Was never ever good at numbering lists. When Lotus 123 came out, and then Excel, with the auto-numbering features, I was so happy.

I will miss her so much and am still so amazed at her power of touching others. I understand the auction will continue for which I am grateful because the vet bill didn't die with her- but- my heart did-

ReplyDeleteI just posted a long post but FaceBook ate it... Mary Anne, I cannot adequately express the depth of my sorrow ... I am so sorry for your grief! Know that I grieve right along with you.. I had so hoped that Sweet Shell would be able to rally and overthrow the ill-health and thrive into the glorious sweet and beautiful person we all saw. Please know that you gave her the greatest Gift one person can give another: the Gift of self-respect and Love. You allowed her to know what true caring is, what clean blankies feel like, what health feels like, albiet too brief.... What true Love is. Shell will be awaiting you at the Rainbow Bridge, waiting for her *Angel* YOU... My Puck will show her around until such time as you will be reunited... My Puck knows all the good fishing spots, all the warmest places with the sweetest grass, and Puck knows where God keeps the Kitty treats :~) He'll show her. He's been my faithful Guide for all the Kittehs who leave before us... (I still miss him so...) My deep condolences.. And my deep Thanks for "sharing" Shell with us.. I know I speak for others when I say that Shell touched many lives without even being able to "meet" us in purrson.. I'm so sorry ... I know there is a Shell-sized hole in your heart :~(

I wonder if you might consider a photo contest in memory of Shell, where we can donate (e.g. $5 per picture) to post pictures of ourselves wishing her well at the Bridge. People are being very generous here at the auction, but Mary Anne can surely use the additional money to help with her vet bills and vet bills for other kitties she cares for.
