Hi there, this is Shell's new human. I call her Shell, because she is just a whisp of what she can become. Her legs resemble chopsticks, they tremble from time to time, not from fear because here, she has nothing to fear. But they tremble from weakness and neglect.

People ask me, where did she come from? I believe she came from God, because her story as it spreads throughout the Internet has lit fires in so many people affecting them in ways I would have never imagined. 

She was part of a small colony. The woman, who tried her hardest to care for the eight cats, could hardly care for herself. The cats were housed in a small trailer on the side of a muddy hill; the windows boarded up to guard against prying eyes. The cats, they had air, and a way out of the trailer as the floor was cracked and rotting, falling apart, much like the woman who thought she was “helping” 

I saw her right after she was taken from the only home she knew. She had been placed in a carrier in another rescuer’s care. Her new home was inadequate. She was crammed into a small carrier with just enough room for her, a litter pan and her water and food bowl. This meant that her only bed was her litter pan. She was stacked on top of other cat crates when she caught my eye. Bleary-eyed and sad, her tongue hanging halfway out of her mouth, heavy, smelly drool  pouring out of her mouth, she smelled like infection and neglect. She watched me pass by and then come back. Ten minutes later, she was in my car and on the way to the vet. 

When he looked in her mouth he discovered rodent ulcers, two teeth almost rotted through, stomatitis and gingivitis. Add to that, she is bone thin, suffers from Fragile Skin Syndrome (her skin will tear if you aren’t careful). She needs to be handled gently. She has feline herpesvirus, UTI and URI compounding her problems. She is unable to clean herself and if she scratches her skin, it breaks open and bleeds.

Her journey is long and is just beginning. She has many vet visits to not look forward to in her future. But, she is safe, she has all her basic needs; food, shelter, fresh water, clean litter pans and a caring vet. She has a  mission to perform- one she’s already started. Bless her lovely little soul….If she was on Facebook, I wonder how many friends she would have for in her new life, the world has embraced her.
